I changed out the water pump and that didn’t work. Then I heard weird noises. It turns out the old pump was still working. The fan will not turn when the system tries to get it going. It goes forward and backward and makes a weird noise. Then it stops doing that for about 2 minutes and tries again. So not the water pump. This is a brand new furnace. I checked the fan, it turns freely. So this is a motor issue or a signal issue. My guess is it is the motor. Very frustrating. I have changed the furnace filter every 3 months. So it has not been starved for air to cavitate. I think the motor is just not doing it right. Commutator, brush, something is wrong in the motor word.

Crazy story. After we bought this place I had the incoming service upgraded to 220, larger circuit breaker box eliminating a subpanel and adding slots and had old aluminum wiring replaced. The heat and AC were running fine when they finished the work. The code requires the electrician to label each braker so as part of the final service they went around the house flipping switches and testing outlets in order to label the brakers. It was early September, so I wasn’t running heat or AC. Come first cold October morning the new furnace won’t run so I call the contractor. He checks everything out and tells me it’s not getting any power, call the electrician. $99 fee since it’s not a problem with the unit. So I call the electrician. He verifies no power and traces the powerline back to the box, breaker is fine, power at the box, should have power at the furnace. He retraces the line and sees it passes through a wall, but no sign of a split, no junction box and it appears as it should, to be a dedicated line. He flips the breaker to see if anything else turns off. Nope, seems to be a dedicated line. He thinks something shorted the wire like a mouse or squirrel chewing on it. He suggests running a new direct line to the furnace. Okay, do it. He has to come back the next day.
Neither the HVAC guy nor the electrician mentioned anything about the furnace emergency shut off switch. That night I was trying to figure out what happened and went into the basement to look around again and as I started down the stairs, I took notice of the red emergency shut off switch for furnace No.1 (we have 2 zones, 2 systems) and it stuck me that No. 2 should have one also. Sure enough, there was an unmarked switch in the laundry room. It appeared to be on because it was installed upside down. I flipped it “off” and the furnace turned on. I called the electrician and HVAC to let them know I found the problem. The HVAC sent a bill for $250 the following week.
October 25, 2024 at 11:44 am #3079mspartParticipantI am hoping this is all under warranty. What a nightmare. You should have refused the bill from HVAC, they should have known about that e switch word.

October 26, 2024 at 3:31 pm #3080RYouParticipantOh, I did. Since it was a new system, they should have verified it had the required red shut off switch. He gave us a 20% discount on our service contract for spring and fall maintenance on the 2 units. That was equal to $240.
That isn’t the end of it. The following year during spring maintenance. they found the freon for the condenser had leaked out. The unit was installed in Sept so we didn’t use the AC until the following summer. They found the leak in the spring of the following year so it was 18 months after the installation. Leak was due to incomplete brazing of a brass joint between freon line from the condenser to the blower unit. That’s a field connection, not a manufacturing defect. They rebazed and refilled the freon and wanted to charge me $1000 for the freon. No way was I paying that. They billed me and I wrote back that I wasn’t paying. That went back and forth for 3 months then they threatened to send it to a collection agency. I filed in small claims court. Two dyas before the claims court trial i received a letter from their attorney stating they were “forgiving the freon bill and were canceling my service contact with a check for the remainder of the service that I had paid up. Fine, called the court and cancelled the trial. The check they sent was for 2 years of service for both units when I was only due back 1 year. Dummies. Of course I cashed it.
October 28, 2024 at 8:22 am #3081RYouParticipantBrrrrrr 36F this AM but low humidity so no frost. The annuals and veggies survived the night. Near 80 Wed, Thurs and Fri so we may well get another 10 days for out of the garden.
October 28, 2024 at 12:38 pm #3082mspartParticipantGreat story on your HVAC, weird they were going to charge you. Crappy contractor.
Our Habaneros are just now starting to turn from green to orange. They are actually getting yellowish right now. It is wet and nasty here. We’ve had roughly 1 inch of rain over the weekend. Temps are not near freezing yet and nothing close for the next 10 days so I am leaving them there until they start to turn colors.
We had a big wind the other day and it knocked down a huge tree limb that almost hit our garage. Actually it might have because it is within about 8 feet of the garage. I should go take a look. Cedar trees are losing a lot of their “needles” and as a result our roofs and driveways and trails through our backyard are thick with them. My wife had me blow them off last week and they are worse now than then word.

October 28, 2024 at 10:42 pm #3084RYouParticipantMy son has 2 60′ firs in his front yard. You can’t see his driveway and garage roof because the needle drop is so thick. He normally rakes them up and lights them up in his firepit, but we’re so dry out here the state put up a ban on all outdoor fires.
October 29, 2024 at 12:33 pm #3086mspartParticipantWe have a annual burn ban from Jun 15 or so to sep 30 or so. We have done 3 burns so far this month. We collect a lot word.

78 tomorrow Prime weather for the Halloweeners
77 Friday
Drops into the low 60’s for the weekend, then we repeat the 70’s Monday Tuesday Wednesday.October 30, 2024 at 12:15 pm #3088mspartParticipantRain all weekend last weekend, Monday, Wed (today), and Friday. Highs in the 50s next 10 days. Lows in the 40s next 10 days. Our habaneros are turning from green to orange now so we need to keep watch for a freeze word.
