ParticipantWrong, 2″ of snow. 16 F with a high of 25. Declined a late invite from my son to the Penn State v SMU game, just too freakin’ cold and old to leave 6 AM and drive 4.5 hours up and back to spend 4 hours in a 25F wind blown stadium. He and his alum buddies went and froze their butts off at the top of the stadium. But, he did get into Beulah’s Bar-B-Que after the game which combined with the win, made the trip worthwhile in his eyes.

ParticipantMerry Christmas everyone! It is now the 27th and we had a great Christmas. All the kids (but one in DC) came and it was great. I hope you also had a wonderful Christmas.

ParticipantHo Ho Ho Spent the Eve at an Unc’s house and the usual 17 suspects. Spent the night at the daughter’s house then went to a son’s house for Christmas with the same 17 suspects. Came home knocked out. It snowed by them and little melted. Then the Kiddies wanted to play football outside in the snow. It was 42F so it wasn’t too bad except a few got a bit wet falling in the melting snow. Indoors was relatively calm this year.

ParticipantHa ha. Nice last line.
It has rained here in abundance. I got a new jack for my riding mower. It weighs a ton but I’m excited to get to use it. My MIL is now visiting for a week and that should be fun also word.

ParticipantMy daughter dragged her clan down for news year’s eve. Great. Had to stay up for the kids to see the fireworks. She put the two little ones to bed then bugged with the SIL out for a late evening dinner and party a bit leaving us to tend to the 3 older ones. It totally blew my plan to hit the bed early and enjoy new year’s day. They atoned for the evening by bringing a 6 rib prime rib which made for a top notch new years lunch.
BTW
Happy New Year to all.

ParticipantHappy New Years to y’all as well. We had a low key celebration which did allow for getting up at a decent hour and feeling good the next day. I had to go to work yesterday and today. It’s rough times when you have to go to work word!

ParticipantMy wife tells friends I never retired, just changed careers to a tradesman. Matter of fact I went from working 5 days a week to 6 and 7. All that is finally winding down. Little things keep popping up. My son gave me a vintage neon Chevy sign so I spent yesterday wiring a new wall outlet so I could hang with the outlet hidden behind the sign. We are in the midst of 2 weeks of freezing temps peaking at 32-33F during the day so I’ll be saddled with my wife’s indoor to-do list. She makes it up daily to keep me busy. To her they are 1 hour jobs. Not so. For example, she wants better lighting in an attic storage closet. Sometimes I think she thinks I just snap my fingers and its done. Not so true when I have to run wiring laterally to cross the rafters. I can’t wait for spring so I can get back outside and replace my last 4 windows.

ParticipantYou my friend, are not retired!! My wife is similar, she thinks something should take 30-40 minutes and wonders where I’ve been for 2-3 hours. I have a few projects around here to do. Prune apple trees, prune blueberries, put new cupboards that we dragged out of someone’s remodel into our shed. That will be tougher as she will need to assist I think. These will replace other shelving we have there. I’m not sure what this will accomplish but I will be able to move around in the shed/workshop better than now with everything in there. But those are part time things, nothing like the full time you have. My son lives in DC and is getting the same freezing temps and snow. He’s probably none to happy about it word.

ParticipantDC had it far worse than us. We had only 2″ though it was enough to cause me to blow the dust off the shovel. It’s the first snowfall more than a dusting in 3 years. I wanted to get back into working outside, but this wasn’t what I had in mind.

ParticipantYeah, my son hasn’t said anything about that. He works 3rd shift so hopefully he is ok.
We here in PNW have gray skies and rain. It is wet outside all the time. Today it got down to 32 but I didn’t see anything frozen anywhere. So not quite there yet here word.

ParticipantDC was a great city to visit, but the City Council and Mayor have ruined it like many other big cities. Crime is rampant. I have to say the Metro Subway system is the best I’ve ever ridden. Well, it’s also the newest. The residents and visitors keep it clean unlike MY and LA. And its surprisingly quiet unlike the one in NYC. No riffraff bothering you either, including at night. My son lived there for two years before getting transferred back north. Now he commuted to Staten Island in NYC which is the only sane borough in the city. Lots of really good restaurants there.

ParticipantWe are planning to visit them in DC in April. We will be using the subway almost exclusively to get around. Should be a good visit and hopefully warmer word.

ParticipantApril should be nice. The cherry blossoms should be open, at least what’s left of them. Biden’s administration removed a lot of them. I always stayed just outside of the city and Metro’d in. The hotel rates were 1/3 to 1/2 inside the city. You ride the metro so much to get around when you stay inside, that staying along the metro outside is just as easy. Unless your son is picking up at the airport, you can take the metro downtown from Reagan airport.

ParticipantYes, that is our plan. We have an airbnb chosen right along the metro, it is in north DC. He just needs to confirm that this is a thing we can do. The goal is to visit him and his girlfriend. And see DC word.

ParticipantThere’s plenty to see. My new favorite is Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center a/k/a the new air and space museum extension out in Chantily VA. It’s a bit of haul from downtown, about 1:45. It has the latest in air travel. If you haven’t been to the monuments, consider an electric bike tour. It’s probably the quickest way to tour them. It’ll save a lot of walking.
