ParticipantYes, there is a lot of walking going on there for sure. It is a half a day journey from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial and almost that much to get to the Jefferson Memorial from there. I have to say, standing against the Washington Monument and looking up, I decided right there, that I did not want to go up and look out the windows. That is a scary building. It looks like it is about to fall over. Too skinny for me word.

ParticipantAbout 5 years ago there was an east coast earthquake that ran from Boston to Virginia, The Washington suffered cracking. I too like the view from the outside now.

ParticipantI forgot to mention the Old Ebbitt Grill downtown near the Whitehouse. It’s a great place for lunch. The oldest bar in DC.
Heading into freeze week here. It’s been cold the past few days barely breaking 30 but next week, which is typically the coldest week of the year in the Northeast promises to hold true with single digit temps. We get a couple of days in the 40s before it sets in.

ParticipantGetting cold here as well. Next 6 days (including this morning) will be lows below freezing. Not all that cold but a little. I think it gets to 27 at the coldest. My son is a salt spreader and is busy the next week word.

ParticipantThose guessers are saying 6-12″ of snow this afternoon before the temp drops below 30. I’m guessing 1-2 inches but still the coldest week of the year. Gks want me to come north to go sledding. I may do just that.
January 20, 2025 at 12:21 pm #3457mspart
ParticipantSledding is pretty much fun at any age. Get an innertube too!! No snow but was 26 last night. I’d like snow, but driving is better around here without that stuff. Snow here is usually very wet and then freezes and is icy. Either way extremely slippery. When I lived in MN, the snow was dry and very easy to drive on, plus the roads were plowed so it wasn’t a big deal word.

ParticipantSo it rained for about an hour before it turned to snow. We saw a mere inch and half but after it stopped the temp dropped and froze the wetness against the ground. It was pretty slick this AM. Fortunately we had blue sky all day so after scrapping the top fluff the sun melted the bottom. We’re headed to low single digit for the next few nights. Never made it up north to do the sledding.

ParticipantYeah, that is cold. MN kind of cold. We don’t usually get that here in the PNW, it is fairly temperate here. But it is 26 right now. Seems like it is colder than usual everywhere. Be safe word.

ParticipantBeen freezing my butt off. 3 straight days the temp didn’t breach 20F. Morning below 10. Things are looking better, +32 today possibly mid 50’s by Wednesday.
Went with the kids to the Rutgers / Penn State dual meet last night. I knew ti was going to be a blowout and it sure was. If not for opening bout upset, PSU would have pulled an upset. RU’s 125 Petrson knocked off No. 6 Lillendahl in the opening bout so RU actually had a lead against PSU. It was all downhill from there as RU lost 35-3.
This may well be the best group, top to bottom, PSU has ever put on the mat. All 10 are ranked in the top 7. It sure does look like PSU will finally match Minnesota’s 10 AA team in 2001. And PSU will likely have at least 2 champs and all 10 placing 4th or better.

ParticipantWow, that is complete dominance. I hope it doesn’t happen because the MN feat is pretty cool. Temps here below freezing in the morning and rises to 40 or so in the afternoon. Next week they are saying snow. I guess we’ll see word.

ParticipantAfter 10 days of sub 30 F, 4 days being no higher than 16F, I think we’ve broken out for good. The last 2 have 20’s overnight but 40 during the day. Tomorrow those guessers say 50F, then 5 days of 40+. I hope so, I feel like Frosty, frozen but thawing out. The state allowed the utilities to raise rates by 20% so we’ve been getting killed on the heating bill. The utilities were asking for rate increases of 30-33%. That’s typical of them since the state commission usually rolls the increase back, which is probably where the utilities want it, or more.
My daughter lives on a nice lake. It’s been cold enough to freeze it thoroughly. Went up there on Sunday and took 4 of the boys ice fishing for their first time. My first in like 35 years. Had to dust off the equipment which came pretty close to being sold a few times. I was surprised the auger was still sharp after so many years. 2 of them caught a pickerel of +20 inches jigging and the other 2 caught a few perch. Fortunately, there was no wind out on the ice. They we using the short jigging rods about 36″ so even the perch put up a fun fight. It took some time to tire the pickerel out. We had the fish out of water just long enough for some pics then sent them back home through the ice.

ParticipantI had opportunity to ice fish when I lived in MN for 7 years. Not even in an ice house. So kudos to grandpa for going out there and doing it. Not much opportunity for that around here. It should start raining again in a day or two, but they are saying snow next week. I love the snow. But here in the PNW, it is very wet and very slippery. I live on the side of a mountain and when it snows hard, I can’t get off the hill. Even my driveway is too steep to get up or down safely. Slide off the driveway going down, and spin tire going up. A few times I had to get a running start to about 25-30 mph to have enough momentum to make it to the top. But it is beautiful when it snows. I love it word.

ParticipantYup, beautiful while it’s coming down, but then please melt away. They say 2 inches of rain tonight. The ground is rock solid, frozen to about 4″. There won’t be any ground drainage, so I’m expecting major runoff and flooding. That’s unfortunate since we are still deemed high fire hazard due to the fall drought. It looks like we’re are losing an old, 5 foot ball Korean boxwood due to the drought. It looked fine all summer, but then in October/November most the leaves browned and dropped. Lots of bare deems now. I spoke with the county horticulturist and says to let it be for now and when the spring growth begins give it a severe cutback, then cross your fingers the roots recover.

ParticipantOur local mountain pass is getting 2 feet of snow over today and tomorrow, which means it is raining here ha ha. We are slated to get snow this weekend, but who knows. Lows going into the low 20s next week. It’s been cold and gonna be cold again. Highs will be above freezing, some just barely. So colder than usual for us.
We hacked the apple trees back quite a bit. We need to hit the blueberries next. Boy they gave big the last two years. Local blackberries are superb but they come on and last about 2 weeks, so you gotta get them fast. You just walk around the neighborhood and there are plenty everywhere. They are weeds here word.
