ParticipantShe had the laser surgery which is not covered by Medicare. We found out they do cover a small portion of the surgery. We opted for the upgraded lens replacement which is not covered. You are about right on the price, costing us $3200 per eye, mostly for the lens upgrade which should eliminate her need for glasses. Just an FYI, she came out of the surgery and her sight was blurry, so you may come out temporarily blinded until the lens replacement settles in, supposedly about a week.

mspartParticipantYeah, I would be blinded if it takes a bit to settle in. I can see right now so I’m good but the thought is there. I’m glad it seems to have worked for your wife. Hopefully it lasts a long time.
SuperBowl is coming and Olympics. I’m going to have to pay for some streaming services so I can watch. Peacock is 10/month. Not sure how to get the SB yet. I’ll listen to it if it costs too much word.

Participanto you have YouTube TV or Hulu + Live TV, they too will stream the game. I’ve got an eerie feeling it’s going to be a Seahawks blowout.
The winter freeze broke for a couple of days. It hit 35 today and maybe 36 tomorrow before sliding back to highs in the 20’s.
Punxsutawney Phil confirmed 6 more weeks of winter. The heating bill is a killer this winter thanks to 30% increase from rate hikes the past two years.February 3, 2026 at 12:50 pm #4386
mspartParticipantI’m not really an NFL fan. I like college football and follow Bama throughout the season. But Seattle is in it so I’ll jump on the bandwagon.
Yeah 6 more weeks of winter. When doesn’t he see his shadow? How does he tell anyone, “hey, I saw my shadow”? Seems like a funny weather prognosticator. I suppose it brings in the crowds to the town once a year so there is a influx of cash at least once a year, better than nothing.
I think I’ll do the Peacock thing, that gives me the game and then the olympics. I’ll just do that and see how it goes word.

ParticipantThe folks in Punxsutawney, PA really snowballed everyone. Phil lives in a custom room that’s part Punxsutawney Library. It’s heated the feed him and even made space for his wife Phillis. There is a large viewing window, and the only sunshine Phil sees is when the sun peeks through the window.
We’re in for a brutal weekend. Temps will drop to single digits and then a northwest wind blows in gusting to 50 mph. Temps will rise a bit during the day but the windchill is forecast to –15F. We’ve had the low temps before, even a bit lower but not with the wind/windchill hat low. The furnace may be on a permanent run for quite a while.

mspartParticipantWell, we have marmots here in WA. They generally live around Mt Rainier. Big animals actually. One was interviewed and asked if he can predict weather by seeing his shadow. He said, and I quote, “Whatchoo talkin’ ’bout willis!! That’s Phil’s gig.” So there you have it. The animals are all in league. Phil has a lock on the gig. Sounds like a cozy way to go.
We will be heading to Phoenix end of next week for some sun and warm. Not that it is COLD here, it is just not pleasant. Stay safe in the cold word.

ParticipantWoke up this AM and it was 27 F. It is now 4 PM and it’s 13 F and sunny. It still heading down about 1 F per hour. By the AM we should knocking on 4 F. The 25 mph wind is projected to continue for the next 24 hours. It’s cold outside. This stuff is for North Dakota, not NJ.
February 9, 2026 at 1:22 pm #4398
mspartParticipantYeah that is ND stuff. I remember in MN we had a day where I watched the thermometer drop 40 degrees in a few hours. I could literally watch the needle move. It was crazy.
Seahawks won!! It was quite the game for the Hawks. Patriots had a hard time. We are about to get a millionaire’s tax here in WA which will probably mean that the Seahawks will not be near as good in a few years. If it passes it will take effect in 2029. It will charge the players that visit to play as well. So that will be a problem for the Hawks. There is talk right now of them and the Mariners going to Portland. There was talk of the Sonics coming back ( it would be an expansion team but Seattle somehow kept the Sonics moniker) but that won’t happen if this legislation passes. It’s just crazy. Nevermind that it is unconsitutional per the WA state Constition, which says a tax must be of the same rate levied on everyone. So I guess we’ll see.

ParticipantI watched until the Seahawks pulled the interception in the 4th. That was lopsided, boring game. I was ready switch out but the Pats hit their touchdown giving them a chance for a comeback. I’m not really surprised by Darnold since he left the Jets. He had no O line and weak receivers. He truly did learn under fire. At least he came out with good knees.
#1 son had a big weekend, Granddaughter’s cheer team won the national championship for youth 14 and under down in Florida. His #3 son won the central jersey region youth wrestling championship at 45 lbs. It’s ages 6 and under and he’s only 6 and42lvs.. Went in seeded #2, had a bye, fall, dec 12-5 and a fall in the final. He was losing in the last 2 bouts, 5-0 in both, but hung in there with a few takedowns and near falls. In the final He got a TD and then loaded up a cradle for the fall. His opponent was riding his real well frustrating him, then in the 2nd period all hell broke loose with a couple of TDs and NFs before he locked up the cradle.

mspartParticipantSounds like a great weekend! I don’t have anything that exciting going on. We have little grandkids, 6 and 3. 6 year old is in dance and gymnastics. The 3 year old loves trucks, trailers, cars, trains. So that’s pretty much what we do when he comes over. My son and his wife live about 10 minutes away with very bad traffic. So we see them quite regularly. Fireworks were going off we could hear after the win. I was hoping for a shutout, but that was not to be. It really was a defensive battle. Both QBs got taken down a lot. Seahawks set a field goal record with 5. That really is nothing to brag about. Except they got close enough to score.
Watching the Olympics and enjoying that. My wife likes the ice skating, I like the speed skating, alpine skiing, ski jumping, sledding (all forms), and not curling!!! So watch what I can of the competition. We did watch ice skating and I thought Japan was robbed in the team event. Their guy was solid, our guy was flashier but almost fell once. But he got more points and USA got gold. The Japanese guy was inconsolable. Both looked really good. There was an Italian guy that looked pretty good too. I’ve got some stuff I have to do tonight so probably no TV time until later in the evening.

ParticipantHaven’t watched much of the Olympics but caught luge, skeleton and this new mogul+ jumping head to head racing. They keep adding goofy events for the winter games and cutting back in the summer events.
Watched OSU v PSU wrestling. On paper it should have been much closer but OSU got walloped winning just one bout.
No. 2 sons entered the craziest junior tournament yet, a round robin event, 6 bouts in 2 hours. Both took 2nd place going 5-1 but each could have made 6-0. One gave up a TD with 2 seconds left and lost by 1 point. The other had a tilt going, ref gave a two count then pulled it back and he lost by 1. 4 mats, 2 weight classes at a time, 1 minute periods. You finish a bout then go on deck on the mat. The only break they got was if they had a pin to end early. In the end it great that we were out of there in 4 hours rather than it being an all day bracketed event and waiting 2 hours between bouts. The kids got twice as many bouts in.

ParticipantJust as the remainder of the 11 ” ice and snowfall we had last month melts away, BAM, we’re getting blasted with a 24″ blizzard. Crazy NJ weather, 50 F one day, 24″ of snow the next day.
February 23, 2026 at 12:44 pm #4462
mspartParticipantWeather seems crazy on the east coast. Weather here is pretty tame. I was in Phoenix last week soaking up some warmth. It was colder there for us but 20 degrees warmer than here.
My daughter came over and helped (actually did) cleanout the shed. We got rid of a ton of stuff. Some was sad like my father’s table saw that he built in college. Poured the metal and everything. I almost said no, but it is a dangerous piece of equipment and I have no use for it. That was sad. I have also been carting around a shotshell reloader forever and it went as well. Those were the two saddest things to get rid of. But the shed has a lot more room now. So that is good.

ParticipantThe day after the almost all of the snow from last month’s snow melted, away we get hit with 18″ over 24 hours. Wet snow too, not that Colorado fluff. Now I hear we may get 3 more on Wednesday and 8 more on Friday. Last year I didn’t pull the shovel out of the garage onca.
I’ve been Phoenix twice for work A 3 day conference in November and a 4 day conference in September. I was expecting 70’s. in November It didn’t break 40. I under packed for that temp and had to go buy a sweater. The September trip was good, solid low 80’s. I took a drive out to mountains of Sedona, Beautiful, I’d like to spend more time out there.
February 26, 2026 at 12:27 pm #4465
mspartParticipantSedona is nice for sure. Been there once. Yeah, Phoenix is usually warm, but sometimes it is not.
Just got back from Boise where I was visiting my brother. I went because he had been talking up a band he had seen a number of times and said they are great. So I went to see them because they were not coming to Seattle. The Infamous Stringdusters. It was one of the greatest shows I’ve ever seen. The musicianship, the togetherness, the precision, all just incredible. I was just blown away. I have not seen that except with the Billy Joel concert, that band was on. But these guys were better. Bluegrass is not my thing but this was just something else.
We also played guitar a lot. That was a lot of fun. Great couple of days in Boise!!
