mspartParticipantYeah, similar story sort of. We did an AirBNB in Florence. It had a washer/dryer combo but the guy that let us in said not to use it because it locks you out so you can’t get your stuff out. Dang!! Then we made it to Rome where we had to wash, and we did it in the sink and hung stuff up in the bathroom. We stayed in that place for a few days so we could do that more easily. We took all we could in a back pack and we had no other luggage. So it was great for mobility but limiting in amount. But I’d go that way again, it worked out great. We drove from Milan to Bolzano to Passo Giau (near Cortina d’Ampezzo – site of 2026 Olympics), back to Bolzano, to Montepulciano, to Sorano, to Florence where we gave up the car. We trained and taxi’d every where else from then on. From Florence to Rome and back to Milan to fly out word.

ParticipantWifey was leery of driving. I was kinds confident but didn’t want the potentials hassles enroute. The easy way out was to agree.

mspartParticipantWe drove and found out about the tolls and didn’t know enough to pay the tolls. So we were driving illegally pretty much the whole time. They collected later word.

ParticipantAfter record rain in July, August had 2 thunderstorms totaling 3″. Back to browning grass.

mspartParticipantOur grass is crispy. Funny being in Seattle, you would think our lawns woudl be green year round. I remember as an older teen we had a drought year and people were actually painting their grass green. Our front yard is huge so we have never watered it. We moved here 20 years ago and for the first 10 years or so this was not an issue. But the last 10 years or so, it has been warmer and drier and we have crispy grass. Only the weeds are green. Of course, word.

ParticipantGot 1.5″ Saturday night. Read it was coming so I ripped out an old garden and grass seeded about 70 sq ft. Ripped out plants and weeds, and while digging roots I uncovered about 30 peanuts in the shell buried by squirrels. Someone must have fed them the nuts. I had to add 2 yds of topsoil to the garden and leveled out some low spots around the yard. Then the rain hit and gave it nice soaking to jumpstart the seed.

mspartParticipantGood planning. We are getting rain this week but will add up to around 1 inch or so by the end of the week. Not a 1.5 inch drop all at once.
We have tomatoes and cuc’s and zuch’s and anaheim, habanero, jalapeno, bell, gypsy, and chocolate peppers. The tomatoes have taken over their area and are smothering the peppers but they are giving and doing ok. My wife grew kale and didn’t like it. She threw it out for the deer and they are not interested either. A lesson there I think!!
I ran a new hose out to the garden. We have a 100′ hose going halfway and another 100′ to the garden. The old one leaked like crazy. So now we have one that doesn’t leak.
I fixed my chipper. That’s a very long story, but i took it apart to sharpen the blade and didn’t put it together completely. Lost the blade and two screws holding it on. The blade a screw came out the chute, but the other bolt (screw) came out of the housing which is 1/8″ thick steel. I’m lucky I wasn’t killed really. Anyway, I bought a new housing and just put that all back together. I have just a little more to go with that one but it is essentially done word.

ParticipantYeah, don’t know what’s up with tomatoes this year, they’re bearing fruit like crazy. While we were away over 100 turned red. When we left everything was green. Wifey made 4 quarts of tomato sauce and 2 quarts of tomato soup and we still had plenty for salad and sandwiches. The first few days back she spent simmering tomato sauce between naps. We only have 3 tomato plants. The bell pepper plants failed again, only two peppers, same as last year. The garden is only 4 x 8 so everything is cramped. It’s been a nice pick since we got back 2-3 every other day. I tried horseradish and garlic this year. The garlic seemed to be doing fine, but the wet spring may have rotted the growth. The horseradish seems to be doing okay. Both will get pulled in November, So I have to wait to see if it was worthwhile.

mspartParticipantWe have 7 4×8 grow boxes. I think we have 4 or 5 tomato plants. They have literally taken over and are bearing tons. They have overshadowed the peppers yet they are giving as well. The habanero is a little late but I think that is due to lack of sun from the tomatoes. The zuchs and cucs gave like crazy. We have a watermelon coming. We spent quite a bit of time putting it all in after tearing out what we had before. We have 5 blueberry plants that gave less than last year and gave less due to our 2 year old grandson. He picks and eats. He doesn’t recover much, it all goes in the mouth. It’s hilarious. Last year we got 4-5 gallon bags of berries. I don’t think we got 1 gallon. Harvest was less on the bushes and that little guy ate more than half of that with his sister. We will have to do a better job on trimming the tomatoes next year. First time they have gone nuts like this.
I spent a good deal of the spring augering 18 holes for the deer fence. And then putting in the 10 foot 4x4s and concreting them. We have had no deer issues. So that has been a great success word.

ParticipantI used a plastic mesh with screws on 1.5″ PC pipe to encircle the little raised bed we have. The tomatoes have overgrown the 5 ft high mesh. But it works, no squirrels, rabbits, deer or birds have gotten in. The small wrens have landed on top of the pipes, but I think they knew if the glided down they couldn’t get out.
I bought the plants this year. I know both varieties were heirloom but I didn’t mark them on the ground. One bush is producing monsters, 6″ D x 4″ H. The other is 2.5 – 3 ” and round as could be.

mspartParticipantGot a chip dump from a tree company yesterday. I took the day off for other reasons, but ended up moving chips all over the property. Nice cedar chips with a great smell word.

ParticipantWe don’t have many cedar trees around here, they aren’t native.

mspartParticipantI’ve been sick since Thur and pretty much out of action. feeling better now but not enough to go to work. Hopefully tomorrow.
Our neck of the woods we have mostly cedar with some maple and fir. My wife got another chip drop, not free, of real cedar chips for her preschool playground. My daughter and her boyfriend came over to spread them as I am at zero energy level for that kind of thing right now. It looks really good and even the little preschoolers noticed the difference word.

ParticipantThat sucks. I hope you feel well enough to get back working in that yard. I’ve been fighting off a urinary tract infection since Europe. 0 days straight of +90F and I got dehydrated like day 12 from sweating without enough fluid intake. Fortunately, I found a doc service online that was willing to video conference and send me a prescription. I’ve had the UTI before for the same reason, so I was pretty confident that was my problem. The doc listened and emailed a prescription within 30 minutes. Got a cabbie to drive me to a pharmcia and they took the prescription off the phone, no questions. A few doses and I all good. It cost $25 euro for the consultation, $9 euro for the prescription but $40 euro for cab rides to and from. They gave me a 3 day supply of meds which wasn’t enough to fully clear it. So it resurfaced last week. Better now but still taking the meds and ALOT of fluid. You sure do miss a regular piss when you’re backed up.
Anyway, hope you are back to shipshape.

mspartParticipantI’m back at work now. But not feeling 100% yet. But getting better. I hope you are on the mend word.
